Soco cool 2 comments

I’ve been trying to finish this tour of our current neighbourhood for a while, but photo-software and impatient crawler conspire against me. Let’s hope nap time lasts long enough to get this done…

So across the road from our apartment block is Jo’s, an anchor in the very cool South Congress (SoCo) strip. Good place to just hang out and drink coffee. They have live music on Sunday’s.

(Amy’s ice-cream is just across the road though, and when it comes to spending dollars, ice-cream beats coffee in my books)

Further up the road is Hey Cupcake!, a personal favourite for the following reasons:

  • awesome cupcakes. They’ll even squirt whipped cream into the heart of your cupcake at no extra charge, if you’re that way inclined
  • if you’re going to serve food out of a caravan, better be stylin’ in an airsteam
  • and, the dude in the hat (see below). Because sometimes even cowboys need a cupcake…

Speaking of cowboys. Just across from Hey Cupcake! we have…

Finally, a store to fulfill every high-ridin’, lassoo-swingin’, gun-totin’, yee-ha rodeo dream you’ve ever had.

And I’m totally getting me a pair of boots from there…

I must say though, that Austin has been disappointingly low on cowboys (but there are trendy students, musicians and general nice people aplenty). But just in case we forget that we are in Texas, further up the road we find…

I take a bit of a loop around it after W saw two deer being offloaded out back.

Lastly I leave you with this. Your typical Obama-voting, alien-welcoming Austinite-mobile. (Not technically true: typical mobile is either is Prius or a huge truck). And yes, much to my delight, the Texan number plate has a cowboy on it. I can’t wait to get ours!
